São João University Hospital Centre (CHUSJ) in Porto has opened the Northern Human Milk Bank (Banco de Leite Humano do Norte), a life-saving facility for sick infants that relies on the generosity of donor mothers. Created through the refurbishment of CHUSJ’s milk preparation room—where infant nutrition is prepared—the facility brings together a multidisciplinary team including pharmacists, clinical pathology specialists, nutritionists, and other healthcare professionals.

The process begins at home with milk collection by donor mothers, who are evaluated to ensure their health status guarantees milk safety. Milk is stored at home under ideal conditions monitored by CHUSJ, with a dedicated team visiting homes to answer questions and collect donated milk.

Established to safely provide the best possible nutrition for the most vulnerable infants in Neonatal Intensive Care Units, the Northern Human Milk Bank selected BIQ HS as its technological partner. BIQ HS supported this initiative through the implementation of its MilkTRAC solution, which will be further enhanced by the new MilkCenter.

Together, these solutions enable end-to-end control and monitoring of the entire milk workflow—from collection to administration—and are designed to ensure infant safety, full process traceability, and operational efficiency.

BIQ HS acknowledges and appreciates the trust placed in our solutions.
